According to a press release by the Ministry of Labour & Employment on Thursday, this collaboration enables ESIC beneficiaries to access secondary and tertiary medical care at more than 30,000 AB-PMJAY-empanelled hospitals across India, including charitable hospitals, which will soon be part of the empanelled network. Importantly, there will be no financial ceiling on treatment costs, ensuring beneficiaries receive quality care without financial constraints.
Review and Implementation Updates
The convergence initiative was reviewed on November 26, 2024, by Sumita Dawra, Secretary, Labour & Employment, Government of India. Ashok Kumar Singh, ESIC’s Director General, emphasised that this step would significantly enhance access to quality healthcare for ESIC beneficiaries.
Strengthening ESIC’s Healthcare Framework
ESIC’s existing healthcare infrastructure of 165 hospitals, 1,590 dispensaries, 105 Dispensary-cum-Branch Offices (DCBOs), and around 2,900 empanelled private hospitals will continue to operate, further supported by AB-PMJAY’s resources.
The ESIC scheme, which has grown substantially over the past decade, now covers 687 districts out of India’s 788 districts, compared to 393 districts in 2014. This convergence is expected to extend ESIC benefits to the remaining uncovered districts, significantly enhancing coverage.
Advancing Social Security and Healthcare Equity
The partnership aims to strengthen India’s social security ecosystem by ensuring affordable and quality medical care for workers and their dependents. It aligns with the broader objective of promoting health equity and making healthcare accessible to those who need it the most.
AB-PMJAY: A Cornerstone of Affordable Healthcare
Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), one of the world’s largest health insurance schemes, has been pivotal in delivering accessible healthcare to economically disadvantaged families. The scheme provides free medical services at over 30,000 empanelled hospitals nationwide, reinforcing India’s healthcare infrastructure and empowering citizens with better health outcomes.
This strategic collaboration between ESIC and AB-PMJAY marks a significant milestone in India’s journey toward universal healthcare, ensuring a healthier and more secure future for the workforce.
