“As this was his (Samson) team’s second offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Samson was fined INR 24 lakhs," read a statement from the BCCI.
“The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, will be fined either INR six lakhs or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser," it added.
RR were also penalised during their fielding for the slow over-rate as they were allowed one less fielder outside the circle during the final over of GT inning at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The home team collected 16 runs from the 20th over, bowled by Sandeep Sharma and finished with a mammoth total of 217/6.
Chasing 218, RR kept losing wickets regularly and the only time when they appeared in the contest was when Samson was batting alongside Shimron Hetmyer. The duo got together when Dhruv Jurel fell in the eighth over and stitched a 48-run partnership to lift RR from 68/4 to 116/4 before being separated.
However, once Samson was dislodged on 41, GT took control and bowled out RR for 159 in 19.2 overs to record a big 58-run win.
It was GT’s fourth win of IPL 2025 which has propelled them to the top spot in the standings with eight points from five matches. Delhi Capitals, who have played two matches less than GT, have dropped to the second spot.
RR are now seventh on the table.
