In a statement, the NIA said Rana was escorted to New Delhi by teams from the NIA and National Security Guard (NSG), including senior officials, on a special flight from Los Angeles.
NIA ‘formally arrest’ Rana
The NIA added that their investigation team have “formally arrested" Rana—a Canadian citizen of Pakistani origin who had been living mainly in Chicago—soon after he stepped off the plane, following all required legal procedures.
The NIA secured Rana’s extradition following years of sustained and concerted efforts and after the terror mastermind’s last-ditch efforts to get a stay on his extradition from the US failed.
Rana was being held in judicial custody in the US pursuant to proceedings initiated by the NIA under the India-US Extradition Treaty.
Rana, identified as one of the masterminds behind the deadly 26/11 attacks, has been charged with criminal conspiracy, waging war against the government of India, murder and forgery and under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. He is expected to be lodged in Tihar Jail in the national capital.
