Bullet Train Project: Work On 360 Km Done At Viaduct Level, Track Slabs Being Laid, Says Railway Minister

The work on 360 kilometres of the bullet train project out of the total length of 508 km has been finished at the viaduct level, and the track slabs are being laid, union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Saturday. He was visiting the bullet train construction sites in Anand, Gujarat.

Last month, News18 reported that 47% physical progress has been achieved on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Project—India’s first bullet train.

Speaking to the media after the inspection, the minister said work on “almost 360 km of section has reached at the viaduct level and track slab is being laid".

Slamming the then Uddhav Thackeray government in Maharashtra, the minister added that “the loss of two and a half years that we had due to the permission denied by Thackeray, we are trying to make up for that as well".

The minister added that almost two kilometres of the undersea tunnel are also ready in Maharashtra.

Structural work completed for 6 out of 8 stations in Gujarat

Sharing the progress of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Project, the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) said structural work is completed for six out of eight stations in Gujarat.

It also said that viaduct construction has been completed on 272 km and pier work on 372 km. The work of pier foundation has been completed on 386 km, while girder casting is done on a 305 km section.

“Bridges on 13 rivers completed – Par (Valsad district), Purna (Navsari district), Mindhola (Navsari district), Ambika (Navsari district), Auranga (Valsad district), Venganiya (Navsari district), Mohar (Kheda district), Dhadhar (Vadodara district), Kolak River (Valsad district), Vatrak River (Kheda district), Kaveri River (Navsari district), Kharera (Navsari district) and Meshwa (Kheda district)," the statement added.

Six steel bridges and five PSC bridges have been completed and noise barriers have been installed over 130 km.

Overhead electrification work has started in Gujarat, and 112 km of track bed construction has been achieved so far in the state.

The work on a 21-kilometre tunnel between BKC and Shilphata in Maharashtra is under construction, and seven mountain tunnels are under construction in Palghar district, Maharashtra, through NATM.

“Work has started on all three elevated stations, and the base slab at Mumbai Bullet Train station is being cast in Maharashtra," the statement added.

The project

India’s first bullet train will operate between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The physical work for the project started in September 2017. Initially, the deadline was December 2023. But it was delayed. Now one of the sections is expected to be ready by next year.

For the 508 km project, 12 stations are planned: Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati.

The trains on this high-speed corridor will operate at 320 km/hour. As per the plans, there will be 35 trains per day from one direction, with a frequency of 20 minutes in peak hours and 30 minutes in non-peak hours.
