Fish Prices Likely To Go Up In Tamil Nadu As Annual Fishing Ban Starts Tonight
The fishing ban in Tamil Nadu from April 15 to June 14 protects marine species during spawning. Affecting more than 2,000 motorboats, this annual ban may raise fish prices

The fishing ban in Tamil Nadu, which comes into effect from midnight on Monday, is expected to cause an increase in fish prices. Implemented annually, the ban on motorboat fishing runs from April 15 to June 14, a total of 61 days, to allow for fish reproduction.
The ban is primarily aimed at mechanised fishing boats, like trawlers, which tend to have a greater impact on the marine environment. This seasonal ban, enforced by the Department of Fisheries, aims to safeguard breeding marine species during their spawning period, ensure the long-term sustainability of marine resources, and enhance the livelihoods of fishing communities by conserving fish populations.

This year, the ban will affect over 2,000 motorboats across 14 coastal districts, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Cuddalore, and Nagapattinam. The boats will remain anchored at fishing ports and landing sites. The Ramanathapuram area alone will see more than 700 motorboats docked. During the ban, fishermen typically undertake boat and net repairs.
To mitigate the impact on fishermen’s livelihoods, the Tamil Nadu government is providing financial assistance of Rs 8,000 to each registered fishing family. However, the government is projected to incur a loss of several crores of rupees due to the halt in fishing activities. However, due to its extensive coastline and abundant marine life, Tamil Nadu enforces this annual ban as an essential measure to promote sustainable fishing practices and protect ocean ecosystems.
