These pharmacies are being opened at 33 locations in Chennai, including Alwarpet and Kolathur. Madurai will have the highest number of pharmacies at 52, followed by Cuddalore with 49, Coimbatore with 42, and Thanjavur with 40.
Through this scheme, the public’s medical expenses will be reduced by about 75%, explained Dr. Ezhilan, a doctor and DMK MLA. Speaking to reporters in Chennai, he said that the diabetes medicine called METFORMIN, which is available at Rs. 70 in the market, will be available at the Chief Minister’s Pharmacy for just Rs. 11.
Similarly, Ezhilan said, if someone spends Rs. 3,000 on medicines for high blood pressure and other conditions every month, they can buy the same medicines at the Chief Minister’s Pharmacy for under Rs. 1,000.
The DMK MLA also stated that 762 types of medicines are available at the Chief Minister’s Pharmacy. He emphasised that the supply of medicines provided to government hospitals and urban primary health centres through the Chief Minister’s Pharmacies will remain uninterrupted.
Ezhilan also affirmed that medicines provided to government hospitals and urban primary health centres through the Chief Minister’s Pharmacy will not be stopped in any way.
Ezhilan also addressed the question of why the Chief Minister’s Pharmacy is being opened on the birthday of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. He explained that while it takes up to two weeks for medicines to arrive at Amma pharmacies, medicines at the Chief Minister’s Pharmacy are distributed from warehouses within 48 hours.
DMK MLA Ezhilan, who had firmly stated that there is no chance of Amma Pharmacies being closed, said that the Chief Minister’s Pharmacy will be healthy competition to those pharmacies.
