A 16-year-old girl from Ahmedabad fled a forced marriage to a 30-year-old man. An NGO worker alerted the helpline, and the RPF intervened

A 16-year-old girl from Ahmedabad faced a grim choice, marry a 30-year-old man or sever ties with her family. With no other options, she ran away from home. Terrified and carrying little luggage, she arrived at Sabarmati railway station.
An NGO worker noticed her distress and, becoming suspicious, immediately contacted the Abhayam 181 women’s helpline. The RPF team soon arrived and discovered that the girl had fled from a town in Bihar to escape a forced marriage.

When the police contacted her father, his response was both stern and shocking: “We have nothing to do with her!"
Stunned by his indifference, the girl sought help from her maternal uncle. Her uncle was equally shocked but, after failing to persuade the family to stop the marriage, he stepped in to take responsibility for her.
The girl reportedly spent two days in a government observation home before her uncle arrived to take her. He assured authorities that he would ensure her safety, allow her to continue her studies, and not marry her off before the legal age. The NGO and women’s helpline team will continue to monitor her to ensure she faces no further difficulties.
