Dietitian Satnam Kaur shares that both roti and rice are high in carbohydrates and have a high glycaemic index. Eating them together can cause a rapid increase in blood sugar levels. People with diabetes should avoid this combination.
Increased Risk of Obesity
One roti is equivalent to half a cup of rice. If a person eats one bowl of rice with two rotis, they consume approximately 500 grams of carbohydrates, whereas the recommended daily intake is around 130 to 140 grams. Excess carbohydrates in the body raise blood sugar levels, which then convert into fat, leading to weight gain. High insulin levels prevent calorie burning, increasing the risk of obesity.
Digestive Issues
It is recommended to consume only one grain at a time. If both roti and rice must be eaten, there should be a gap of at least four hours between them. This is because they digest at different rates – rice is light and digests quickly, while roti takes longer. Eating them together can disrupt digestion, leading to stomach pain, gas, and bloating.
Hormonal Imbalance and Pimples
Eating roti and rice together can cause hormonal imbalances, particularly in women. This may result in pimples on the face, back, and neck. People with high cholesterol levels must avoid consuming them together.
Fatigue and Lethargy
Consuming roti and rice together can cause sluggishness and fatigue, as the high glycaemic index leads to a feeling of heaviness in the stomach. Since both are simple carbohydrates, it is better to opt for complex carbohydrates like brown rice and oats, which help regulate blood sugar levels and support weight management.
