Himachal Day 2025: History and Significance

“Hima" (snow) and “Anchal"(lap), two Sanskrit terms, are the roots of the name “Himachal." The state is essentially in the lap of the Himalayas, surrounded by hills and valleys. Himachal Pradesh’s history has been documented since the 4th century BC, during the Mauryan period.

In 1948, Himachal Pradesh became a Union Territory after four districts—Mandi, Chamba, Mahasu, and Sirmour—were merged with more than two dozen princely states. With Shimla as its capital, Himachal Pradesh became India’s 18th state in 1971, decades later.
