Fawad’s statement comes amidst a growing wave of criticism directed at him and his Abir Gulaal co-star, Vaani Kapoor, due to the ongoing political tensions between India and Pakistan. Their upcoming film Abir Gulaal has been mired in controversy since its announcement, and the recent attack has only intensified the calls for a boycott of the film.

Vaani Kapoor, too, shared her grief, writing on social media, “Have been numb, at a loss of words since the time I have seen the attack on innocent people in Pahalgam. Gutted. Devastated. My prayers are with the families."

Many social media users have lashed out at Vaani for continuing to promote Abir Gulaal, calling it “insensitive" and “unpatriotic." One user wrote, “Shame on these low life people who dance on people’s grave," while another commented, “You betrayed our nation, Vaani." This has sparked a wider debate about Bollywood’s involvement with Pakistani talent during times of national grief.

Abir Gulaal has already faced hurdles before its release. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) had earlier opposed the film, warning that any project featuring a Pakistani actor would not be allowed to release in the state. Fawad Khan, who gained immense popularity in India through films like Kapoor & Sons and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, has not appeared in a Bollywood film for years due to the political climate.

The backlash against Abir Gulaal is now spilling over into Vaani’s other films. Fans have started calling for boycotts of Vaani Kapoor’s other projects, including Raid 2, which is set for release on May 1.
