Govinda and Sunita Ahuja’s love story began when Sunita was just 18 years old, and Govinda was still striving to make his mark in the film industry. The couple chose to keep their marriage a secret from the public. Reflecting on that period, Sunita shared in a recent interview that she felt like a child when she became a mother at 19. Her daughter Tina, who joined the conversation, revealed that Sunita’s father disapproved of their union and did not attend the wedding.
Speaking with Hauterrfly, Sunita recalled how her life transformed after marriage. Coming from a nuclear family, she suddenly found herself part of Govinda’s large joint family. “When I got married to Govinda, he had a big family. I got married when I was just 18. I was 19 when Tina was born, so I was still a child when I had the baby," she said. Sunita also revealed that Govinda had made it clear early on that his mother would remain the head of the household during her lifetime, and Sunita lived under her authority.

“At that time, I was too much in love with my husband. He had told me prior that my house will be headed by my mother till the time she is there. After she is gone, then you can do what you want," Sunita shared. She also reminisced about living with many of Govinda’s nieces and nephews, saying, “Then I got used to other kids (Krushna, Vinay) being in the house. They were all very little. I am very fond of kids. My heart does not allow me to say that Govinda’s mom is not there, let me throw everyone out. I thought if you perform good deeds, god will watch, even if the kids don’t."
Despite her fondness for children, Sunita’s relationship with Krushna and his wife Kashmeera has been contentious for years. Reflecting on her sacrifices, she added, “Just because I used to love my husband Govinda a lot, I put up with everything."
Tina also highlighted the stark differences between her mother’s life before and after marriage. “My mom used to wear hot pants, lived in Pali Hill, came from a very rich background. My dad was not that financially strong. He was struggling from Virar. My maternal grandfather was very well-to-do comparatively. It was a very Bollywood story where he told my mother, ‘Are you crazy? He is an aspiring actor.’ He didn’t even attend the wedding because he was not too happy with the whole thing," Tina said.
When asked about her feelings regarding Govinda working with female co-stars, Sunita revealed that she and her husband do not share a typical “husband and wife" dynamic. She stated, “Aaj tak bhi nhi lagta ki hum husband-wife hai. (Even today, I don’t feel that we’re man and wife.)" She also described their playful banter, saying, “Galiya galoch chalti hai humari. (We use abusive language with each other)." According to Sunita, she often jokingly questions whether Govinda is truly her husband, remarking, “Mujhey aaj tak vishwaas nhi hora tu mera pati hai. (I still can’t believe you’re my husband.)"
Sunita, known for her spirited personality, is not only a supportive wife but also a cool mother to their children, Yashvardhan and Tina.
Meanwhile, on the professional front, Govinda, who ruled Bollywood in the 1990s with hits like Hero No. 1 and Coolie No. 1, was last seen in the comedy film Rangeela Raja. Fans are eagerly waiting to see him return to the big screen with his signature charm and humour.
