Sumona Chakravarti is best known for playing Kapil Sharma’s wife on The Kapil Sharma Show, which last aired on Sony Entertainment Television in July 2023. Kapil returned with his show a year later on Netflix India, as The Great Indian Kapil Show, with former cast member Sunil Grover also returning. However, Sumona was noticeably absent from the new version.

In an interview on SCREEN’S The Suvir Saran Show, Sumona shared that she hasn’t watched The Great Indian Kapil Show yet, but clarified that there has been no “breakup" with Kapil, her first onscreen husband.

“There was no breakup. We had a wonderful run of 10 years across different networks. Most marriages don’t work for 10 years actually (laughs), but our onscreen one did. Every year, we’d take a break around June-July. We finished our season. I really don’t know. The last time we were on Sony, that got done in 2023. Then he went on his US tour. And the next thing I heard was that he was coming on Netflix. So honestly, there has been no conversation about that between him and me. It’s not like we picked up the call," she said.

Sumona Chakravarti shared that she’s not close to Kapil Sharma “outside of work" and doesn’t miss being on his show. She said, “I have learnt not to take work home and home to work. I’ve had hard days otherwise."

Sumona Chakravarti defended the portrayal of misogyny on Kapil’s show, saying, “It’s a show! It’s a scripted show! What I really believe, and I’ve always told whoever has questioned me, first and foremost, it’s just acting. It’s just a TV show. Kapil is not insulting Sumona. There’s a difference. There’s a character Bittu and his wife Manju. It’s literally what’s happening around in your environment. Yes, there’s a responsibility, but that comes to me as an individual in real life. If tomorrow, I get caught shoplifting, of course that sets a terrible example. But you also need to have that little bit of common sense that there’s a line between real and reel."
