IndiGo
Low-cost carrier IndiGo is the largest airline in India by passenger volume and fleet size. Headquartered in Gurgaon, it was founded by Rahul Bhatia and Rakesh Gangwal in 2006. It began operations the very same year and the airline received its licence to operate international flights in 2011, after completing five years of operations. It went public in 2015. InterGlobe Aviation, the parent company of IndiGo, is listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange of India. Ronojoy Dutta is the present CEO of the airline.
In December 2019, it became the first domestic carrier to operate 1,500 flights per day. It means the airline operates, on an average, one flight per minute.
Market Share
The airline has a market share of 57.9% as of May 2022. The flight operator claims that it focuses on three things— offering low fares, being on-time and delivering a courteous and hassle-free experience— for offering the best experience to its passengers. IndiGo has a total destination count of 97 with 74 domestic destinations and 25 International. As per the latest ranking of the world’s best airlines by Skytrax, a UK based airline and airport review portal, IndiGo has been voted as the world’s fifth-best low-cost airline in 2021. Skytrax’s World Airline Awards are based on customer surveys where airlines are ranked according to the votes from travellers worldwide.
Co-founder steps down.
In February 2022, co-founder Rakesh Gangwal resigned from the board and is planning to cut his stake in the airline over the next five years, according to its parent InterGlobe Aviation.
The feud between the two co-founders surfaced when Gangwal wrote to the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBIi) to address corporate governance issues at the airline.
A non-executive director, Gangwal had alleged violations in corporate governance rules at the parent group and wanted to remove an article that prevented co-founders from buying publicly-listed shares in InterGlobe and potentially trigger an open offer for the rest of the company.
In Flight Experience
Being a budget carrier, it does not offer complimentary meals on any of its flights, though it offers passengers the option to buy snacks on-board. No in-flight entertainment is available either. However, in September 2019, the company announced its tie up with SonyLIV, an on demand video app, for providing its passengers with entertainment options in-flight and at the airport.
The airline says its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative focuses on three broad themes: children and education, women empowerment and environment.
The airline has 10 consecutive years of profitable operations and was recognised as 'Great Place to Work for in India' for 8 years in a row between 2008 and 2015.
IndiGo's main budget rivals include SpiceJet, GoAir and AirAsia India.
