Farmers in the Patonda area of Burhanpur district, Madhya Pradesh, are turning to innovative solutions to safeguard their crops from extreme weather. One such method, known informally as ‘jugaad‘ for its unconventional approach, involves using sarees to shield crops from intense sunlight and heat waves. This resourceful technique is gaining traction among local farmers.
Pramod, a farmer from the region, explained the process to a Local18 team. He shared that the heat in Burhanpur is significantly higher than the cold, posing a threat to crops like maize, sugarcane, and bananas currently grown in the area. To combat this, farmers wrap sarees around the borders of their fields, which helps to protect the crops from damage caused by direct sunlight.

Despite the initial expense, the sarees can be used for several years, making it a cost-effective solution that ultimately leads to better crop yield and profit for the farmers.
By adopting this creative approach, farmers in Burhanpur are effectively safeguarding their crops and ensuring their livelihoods remain secure amidst challenging weather conditions.
