Delhi-Dehradun Expressway: Alternate Route To Mussoorie To Be 50km Longer To Avoid Jams In Dehradun
Vehicles will be diverted from Dehradun ISBT towards the Shimla Bypass and then along a designated route passing through various checkpoints, including Telpur Chowk and Kimadi, to reach Mussoorie while bypassing Dehradun

The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is nearing completion and is expected to be operational by January, reducing travel time between Delhi and Dehradun to just 2.5-3 hours. However, this development is likely to increase traffic in the Uttarakhand capital, prompting the traffic directorate to devise a comprehensive traffic management plan.
Currently, Mussoorie experiences traffic movement of 10,000 to 15,000 vehicles during weekends or the tourist season. With the expressway opening, this figure is anticipated to rise to 20,000–25,000 vehicles daily, which could lead to severe congestion in Dehradun. To address this, the traffic directorate has devised a special route, requiring tourists to cover an additional 50 km to reach Mussoorie.

Traffic Diversion Plan
The plan involves redirecting tourists heading to Mussoorie to bypass Dehradun. Vehicles will be diverted from Dehradun ISBT towards the Shimla Bypass and then along a designated route passing through various checkpoints, including Telpur Chowk, Nayagaon, and Kimadi, before reaching Mussoorie. A one-way system has been established to streamline traffic flow, with returning vehicles routed differently.
GPS Integration for Tourist Convenience
To assist tourists, the alternative route will be updated on GPS systems. Tourists using Google Maps will be guided along this route from Asharodi to Mussoorie. Police personnel will be stationed at strategic points, and barriers will be installed at Asharodi, ISBT, and Shimla Bypass Chowk to direct vehicles. Any tourist attempting to use unauthorised routes will be redirected via Niranjanpur Chowk and Balliwala Flyover.
Preparatory Measures
The traffic directorate, in collaboration with the National Highway Authority, is addressing necessary improvements, including road widening, installation of barricades, and placement of lights along the new route. These measures aim to ensure a smooth and safe travel experience. Future developments, such as the construction of bridges or flyovers, are expected to further reduce travel distances.
This proactive approach aims to manage the expected traffic surge efficiently while minimising inconvenience for Dehradun residents.
