After Sunil Gavaskar expressed his disappointment at not being invited to join Allan Border in handing over the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to the winning team on Sunday, Cricket Australia has issued a brief statement acknowledging the slip.

The Pat Cummins-led Australia won the fifth and final Test of the series by six wickets to beat India 3-1 and reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time since 2015-16.

Border was asked to present the trophy to Cummins as Gavaskar watched.

“We acknowledge it would have been preferable if both Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar had been asked to go on stage," a CA spokesperson said in a statement as per Fox Cricket.

Earlier, Gavaskar had admitted he would have loved to be a part of the presentation ceremony. “I certainly would have loved to have been there for the presentation. After all, it is the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and it is about Australia and India. I mean, I am here on the ground," he said.

“To me, it should not matter that Australia won when it comes to the presentation. They played better cricket so they won. That’s fine. Just because I am an Indian (I did not present the trophy). I would have been happy to present the trophy with my good friend Allan Border," he added.

India kicked off the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on a promising note with a 295-run win in the opening contest played in Perth. Australia scripted a prompt comeback with a terrific 10-wicket victory in the second Test.

The third Test ended in a draw with rain playing spoilsport in Brisbane.
