Mumbai Indians skipper and star India all-rounder Hardik Pandya was seen on Thursday imparting some valuable advice to young pacer Ashwani Kumar, who picked a match-winning four-wicket haul against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders, to become an overnight star in India.

In what looked to be a mentor-mentee moment, Pandya was seen speaking to Ashwani about staying focused and being prepared for whatever challenges lay ahead for him.

Pandya emphasised the importance of sticking to the franchise’s strategies and maintaining consistency after the brilliant debut Ashwani made against Kolkata.

“Be well-prepared. Put in all your effort and stick to the plan. Look forward to every game you play. Before every match I don’t go with any expectations. I just try to execute my preparation," Pandya said.

“Why did you get success? Because you stuck to the plan and kept bowling at the right line and length, hence success. You just follow your plan and the rest will follow. You bowl well, even if you bowl well, you can’t guarantee a good result," Pandya added.

Ashwani turned heads earlier this week with a brilliant 4/24 spell, making him the first Indian to take four wickets on his Indian Premier League debut.

Mumbai found success in the handy pace of Ashwani, who demolished Kolkata to finally hand his team a win.

IPL has, time and again, given a platform for young players to excel but few have been able to do that. Mayank Yadav, after bedazzling everyone with his searing pace, just faded away.

Mumbai would be hoping Ashwani is not a one-match wonder. Earlier, he said that Pandya settled his nerves before his IPL debut by reminding him that “Punjabis are fearless" and that he should just go out and scare the opposition.

Ashwani, who just ate a banana before the game against Kolkata, credited Pandya for making him feel at ease.

“It is a very good feeling. I hadn’t thought that I’d do so well. Hardik bhai told me, ‘You’re from Punjab, and Punjabis are fearless, so just scare the opponents and enjoy yourself," Ashwani said.
