Ravichandran Ashwin believes formats should not be mixed and a good IPL should be the sole reason for consideration in T20Is and not Tests.

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has stated that a player cannot improve his Test credentials if he has a good IPL season. Shreyas Iyer will have to wait to make a Test return even if he performs very well in the upcoming IPL season, Ashwin opined.

Iyer redeemed himself by performing in ODIs and now it remains in ODIs and it remains to be seen whether he can spring a comeback into the Test team.

Ashwin asked how a good Indian Premier League can be a reason for inclusion in the Test team.

“Tell me one thing: how can a good IPL lead to a Test call-up? How can you improve your Test credentials if you have a good IPL? If you do well in ODIs, someone writes an article about having that player in Tests," Ashwin said while speaking on his YouTube channel.

“If someone does well in Tests, people start talking about return in T20Is. Isn’t all this wrong? If you have a good IPL, then only your T20I credentials should improve," Ashwin said.

The former India spinner lauded Iyer’s redemption, saying that the latter had a big role in helping defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders win their third title in 2024.

Iyer was lauded as India’s silent hero in the Champions Trophy as well, with the star batter playing quite a few crucial knocks in the middle order.

“Shreyas Iyer has done well. The form he showed in the Champions Trophy, I won’t be surprised if he carries on in the IPL. He is a fabulous player. He was instrumental in helping KKR win the title last season," Ashwin said.

Speaking of Iyer, he would be leading the Punjab Kings in the upcoming IPL 2025, after he was released by KKR last year and was picked up by PBKS for a whopping Rs 26.75 crore.

Meanwhile, having performed the role of a ‘silent hero’ at number four in the title-winning Champions Trophy campaign, Iyer wants to make a big impact at number three in IPL 2025, he has said.

Iyer isn’t part of India’s T20 set but a productive debut season for Punjab can revive his international career in the shortest format.
