Shubman Gill scored a historic century in the third ODI against England at Narendra Modi Stadium, becoming the first Indian to score a century in his 50th ODI. He made 112 off 102 balls.

Indian vice-captain Shubman Gill’s century in the third ODI against England at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Wednesday was not only brilliant but also history-making. With it, the opening batter became the first Indian to score a century in his 50th ODI. It was his seventh triple-figure score in the format.

On reached his three figures off just 95 balls, flicking a leg-sided length ball from Mark Wood to the mid-wicket fence before taking off his helmet and bowing down to the applause of the crowd. It was an exhibition of arguably the perfect way to bat in ODI cricket, as he took his time against the new ball before slowly increasing the tempo and going on the aggressive.

    He got out for a well-made 112 (102) after Adil Rashid spotted his attempt the play a big sweep and slipped in a googly which sneaked under his bat to knock over his leg-stump. However, till then, he had helped India put up a strong 226/3 in the first innings.

    It was also Gill’s third consecutive 50+ score in ODIs after half-centuries in the first and second matches.

    Gill’s century great news for India

    This is the second time Gill has found this kind of clinical consistency just before an ICC tournament. He did the same for the 2023 World Cup but his momentum was halted when he got diagnosed with dengue and had to miss a few matches. Still, he ended 2023 with five ODI hundreds.

    Now, India would be glad to see him peak like this again just one week before the 2025 Champions Trophy, with the tournament starting next Wednesday (February 19) in Pakistan. India’s campaign will begin on the following day against Bangladesh in Dubai.

      By next Wednesday, Gill might also become the top-ranked ICC men’s ODI batter. In the most recent update, which came during the Ahmedabad ODI, he was just five rating points behind Babar Azam.
