Chennai Super Kings suffered their first ever defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru at home since the inaugural season of IPL in 2008. On Friday, the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side failed to chase down 197 at Chepauk and lost the IPL 2025 contest by 50 runs. The margin of such defeat in a T20 is significant but not for Gaikwad who felt batting wasn’t easy and put the blame on CSK’s poor fielding for the result.

“To be honest, I still feel 170 was a par score on this wicket," Gaikwad said after the match. “It wasn’t that great to bat. Bad fielding cost us. When you’re chasing 170, you have a little more time, but when you’re chasing 20 runs extra you have to bat differently in the powerplay, and it didn’t happen today."

Gaikwad said the pitch got a bit slower and a little sticky during the second innings.

“It (wicket) got a little slower, it got a little sticky. The new ball was sticking a bit. Don’t know how it happened," he said.

RCB new ball bowlers did a fantastic job by getting rid of three CSK batters including Rahil Tripathi, Gaikwad and Deepak Hooda inside the Powerplay itself.

When asked what CSK could’ve done differently during the chase, Gaikwad said, “Obviously Rahul backed his shot, I backed mine as well, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. There are times where you have a par score in your mind and probably chasing 20 runs extra, you always want to be a step ahead while chasing. That’s what the thinking was. But still happy that we didn’t lose by a big margin, it was just 50 runs," he added.

Gaikwad said his team needs improvement in fielding.

“Definitely a different scenario when you have three world-class spinners in the team, you want new batters to face them. That’s where the game changes. It didn’t happen this time. We dropped catches at crucial time. The momentum kept going (their way) till the last over," Gaikwad said.

“There’s a long flight to Guwahati (for next match) but we just have to turn up mentally and look at the areas we can improve I feel the fielding has to improve a lot and we have to come back stronger in the fielding department," he added.
