Veteran Delhi Capitals batter Faf du Plessis has said that he is going to drink some more masala tea from now on since he believes that the classic Indian drink is the secret to Ashutosh Sharma and Vipraj Nigam’s power-hitting skills, which took the team over the line on Monday.

The Axar Patel-led team made a victorious start to their IPL 2025 campaign, even as they looked down and out for most of the game.

Ashutosh was brought in as an impact player in place of Mukesh Kumar and played a match-winning knock for Delhi.

Du Plessis lauded the impact player rule after his team’s comeback victory over Lucknow and said that he hopes to emulate his teammates’ hitting capability with some masala tea.

“A lot of the cricketers, if you ask them, they would complain about the [Impact Player] rule in the IPL, but this is obviously why that rule is there, for games when you think that you’re completely dead and buried, someone comes in and plays like that," Du Plessis said while speaking at the post-match press conference.

“I’m going to drink some more masala tea to make sure I can hit the ball as the boys do at the end," Du Plessis added.

Ashutosh and Vipraj were involved in a match-winning 53-run stand off just 22 balls for the seventh wicket.

After Ashutosh finished the 19th over with fours, it was Mohit Sharma who was on strike. He survived an LBW call and then took a single off the next delivery to hand the strike back to Ashutosh.

“Unbelievable, it reminded me a little bit of the 438 game against Australia when Makhaya [Ntini] got that important single towards the end. That’s probably the best and most important single that Mohit Sharma has ever taken in his life, beautiful forward defence, just pushing it into the gap," Du Plessis said.

“What a story to get the big man back on strike to hit it for six," the veteran Delhi batter added.

Ashutosh’s late heroics earned Delhi a thrilling one-wicket victory over Lucknow.
