Mumbai Indians’ Vignesh Puthur had an IPL debut to remember against the Chennai Super Kings, as he dismissed both Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube and Deepak Hooda at the M.A Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday.

Vignesh, son of an auto rickshaw driver, first gained the spotlight when he was brought on as MI’s impact substitute, replacing the legendary Rohit Sharma on the field. He showed that he belonged on the big stage with his left-arm wrist spin as he got two of the most dangerous names in the CSK batting unit.

According to a report by Sportstar, the wrist-spinner comes from the Malappuram district in Kerala and has yet to make his debut for the state. In fact, he has only played for Kerala at the Under-14 and Under-19 levels so far.

He also was a part of the inaugural season of the Kerala Cricket League (KCL), representing the Alleppey Ripples. But he was not as spectacular as seen today. In fact, he only picked up two wickets in the three games he played then. But he was seen by Mumbai Indians’ scouts and picked up by the franchise for a bargain price of Rs 30 lakh.

Vignesh moved to Thrissur to improve his cricketing career at the collegiate level where in the Kerala College Premier T20 league, representing the St. Thomas College, he was able to make his mark.

On his IPL debut, he made a statement by getting the big wicket of the CSK skipper with a fuller ball that was mistimed to find the fielder at the long-off region. He then followed it up with Shivam Dube’s wicket, one who is considered to be dangerous, especially against the spinners. Just when he was being hit for runs, he got another big wicket from Deepak Hooda as well to sum up what has been a historic debut for the Keralite.

With performances as seen at the Chepauk, Vignesh will certainly look to make a case for his selection in the coming games and will hope that he can continue his rich vein of form in his first season for the Mumbai Indians and possibly reach even greater heights.
