Uncapped Paterson Named as Injured Philander's Replacement For Boxing Day Test

Uncapped South Africa fast bowler Dane Paterson has been named in the squad for the first Test against Pakistan, which starts on Wednesday (December 26).

He was named as a replacement for Vernon Philander, who has been side-lined with a hairline fracture on his right thumb, for the Boxing Day Test in Centurion.

The 29-year-old holds an impressive first-class record, with 321 wickets at an average 23.56. Paterson, however, might have to wait for his maiden Test cap to add to his three ODIs and eight T20I caps, as the Proteas are likely to go in with the trio of Dale Steyn, Kagiso Rabada and Olivier.

“We have been looking at him for some time," Cricket South Africa selection convener Linda Zondi said. “He is a bowler who has performed on the domestic scene consistently for a long time and he will be our back-up for the first Test."

This is not the first change South Africa has had to make in their squad for the Pakistan series. Earlier, Duanne Olivier was added to cover for Lungi Ngidi, who’s knee surgery has resulted in him being ruled out till February.
