Cyclone Fengal: Schools In Chennai, Puducherry Shut Amid Heavy Rain Alert

IMD has forecast heavy rainfall in Chennai and Puducherry for the next 2-3 days under the influence of Cyclone Fengal.

Schools in Chennai will remain shut on Friday amid a heavy rain alert due to Cyclone Fengal. Chennai District Collector Rashmi Siddharth Zagade has announced a holiday for all schools from classes 1 to 12 on November 29.

Chennai has been witnessing incessant rainfall for the past couple of days, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted further heavy downpours on Friday.

    Puducherry Education Minister A. Namassivayam has also declared holidays for all government, government-aided, and private schools and colleges in Puducherry and Karaikal on November 29 and 30.

      According to the IMD, the deep depression lies over the Southwest Bay of Bengal and is likely to move towards the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu. The deep depression is then likely to intensify into Cyclonic Storm ‘Fengal’. It will cross the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram around the morning of November 30.

      The IMD had predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall at scattered places over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ariyalur and Thanjavur districts on Friday. Heavy rains are likely to lash Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Perambalur, Tiruchirappalli, Pudukkottai, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts during the next 24 hours. Puducherry is likely to witness heavy downpours for the next two days.
