'Attack On Police Won't Be Tolerated': Maharashtra CM Fadnavis Calls Nagpur Violence A 'Conspiracy'

Following violent clashes in parts of Nagpur, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis termed the attack on police a planned conspiracy during the Assembly session. The Chief Minister said, “Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal staged a protest demanding the removal of a grave. A symbolic grave was burned, and a rumor was spread that a religious message was written on it."

Clashes broke out in Nagpur’s Chitnis Park area in Mahal on Monday. Police were attacked with stones following rumours that a religious text had been desecrated during a protest by a right-wing group demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district.
What Devendra Fadnavis Said On Nagpur Clashes
Devendra Fadnavis said, “A crowd of around 80 people was involved in stone-pelting. A police officer was attacked with an axe and three deputy commissioners were assaulted. Certain houses were deliberately targeted and one DCP was attacked with an axe."
Devendra Fadnavis On Rumours Triggering Violence In Nagpur
The Chief Minister also highlighted the role of rumors in escalating tensions as he stated that the violence erupted due to a rumor about a religious symbol on the symbolic grave sheet.
He said, “Rumours were spread that things containing religious content were burnt….It looks like a well-planned attack. No one has permission to take law and order into their hands."
Following the violence, five criminal cases have been registered and prohibitory orders have been imposed in 11 police station areas, and five SRPF units have been deployed, he said.
What Eknath Shinde Said On Nagpur Violence
Earlier, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said that the clashes look like a “conspiracy". He stated, “People should not try and incite violence between two communities. Aurangzeb should not be glorified."
He added, “Strictest action will be taken against the culprits, no one will be spared. No one in Maharashtra will tolerate support for Aurangzeb."
