In a significant move by Mumbai’s municipal body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced a new initiative to manage the collection of hazardous domestic waste such as used diapers, sanitary pads, and expired medicine bottles. The solid waste management department will soon roll out a dedicated service aimed at collecting such waste from housing societies, residential complexes, beauty parlours, women’s hostels, and educational institutions across the city. Registrations for availing this service began on April 22.

The city produces around 7,000-8,000 tonnes of solid waste every day. Out of this, approximately 70-80 tonnes consist of sanitary napkins, diapers, condoms, tampons, cotton contaminated with body fluids, soiled bandages, syringes, injection needles, and razor blades. It also includes expired medicine bottles and waste generated from beauty parlours. Despite the hazardous nature of this waste, it is often overlooked and disposed of along with regular household garbage.

To address this issue, the BMC will now collect such waste separately using specially designated yellow bags. “We will visit registered establishments to raise awareness about waste segregation," said Kiran Dighavkar from the Solid Waste Management Department.

To streamline collection and ensure safe handling of the waste, the BMC will launch the special service from May 1. To promote awareness and encourage participation, the registration process has been initiated on the civic body’s official website. Registered users can also complete the process via WhatsApp or by scanning a QR code.

This initiative marks a proactive step toward improving urban hygiene and protecting the health of those involved in waste collection.
