Cyclone Michaung which is brewing over the Bay of Bengal is likely to skip Chennai and make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam on Monday morning, IMD said. The forecast shows that the winds in the region could reach speeds of up to 100kmph.

Meanwhile, the authorities issued an advisory and declared a holiday for all schools in Puducherry, Karaikal and Yanam regions on December 4 in view of cyclone Michaung.
Puducherry and the outlying regions have experienced heavy rains for the last few days although there was a lull in the monsoon on Friday.

- The IMD has issued a red alert for the Tiruvallur district for Monday.
- The weather body said that the system may intensify into a deep depression on
- December 2 and into a cyclonic storm the next day.
- Cyclone Michaung is likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a
- Cyclonic Storm over the Southwest Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours.
- Chennai likely to receive light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning for the next 48 hours.
- The administration has declared a holiday for all schools in Puducherry, Karaikal and Yanam regions on December 4.
- Heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places likely over North coastal Andhra Pradesh on December 5.
- The NDRF has made 18 teams available to Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Puducherry and 10 additional teams have been kept ready.
- An ‘orange alert’ has been issued for Odisha on December 5 with a forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall.
- Light to moderate rains and thundershowers are likely in some areas of Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri and Jagatsinghpur of Odisha on December 3.
- CM MK Stalin directed authorities to take precautionary measures, including evacuating people from the places likely to be hit by the cyclone.
- The name ‘Michaung’, has been suggested by Myanmar. This is the sixth cyclone in the Indian Ocean and the fourth in the Bay of Bengal this year.
