The BJP secured 48 seats, trouncing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which managed to win just 22 seats. This victory extended the BJP’s influence in Delhi and marked a significant blow to the AAP, led by Arvind Kejriwal.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has clinched a massive victory in the Delhi assembly elections on Saturday and is set to come to power after 27 years.

In the capital city, three BJP leaders had been chief ministers before Congress came to power in 1998. The three chief ministers were – Madan Lal Khurana, Sahib Singh Verma, and Sushma Swaraj. Now, BJP will announce the fourth chief minister.

Former Delhi Commission for Women chairperson and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Swati Maliwal on Saturday lashed out at outgoing Delhi CM Atishi for celebrating her poll victory despite the party suffered a debacle in the Delhi assembly elections.

While sharing a video of Atishi on her social media platform X, Maliwal said, “What kind of shamelessness is this? The party lost, all the big leaders lost and Atishi Marlena is celebrating like this?”

After the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Delhi election debacle, the Punjab Congress unit came up with an unexpected prediction, saying that Arvind Kejriwal would now seek to become Punjab Chief Minister, replacing incumbent Bhagwant Singh Mann.

Partap Singh Bajwa, senior Congressman and Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, said that after a massive setback in Delhi, Kejriwal will head to Punjab.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) scripted a stunning victory in the Delhi assembly polls as results came in on Saturday, snatching power in the national capital after about three decades and unseating the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

While the BJP won 48 seats in the 70-member legislative assembly, AAP secured only 22 seats after the high of 62 in the 2020 polls, even as the Congress was left empty-handed for the third consecutive time.

In a kind gesture, Prime Minister Narendra Modi briefly paused his victory speech to check on a party worker who appeared unwell. He further asked those around him to ensure the worker was given water and attended to properly.

While addressing the party workers after BJP’s historic return to Delhi’s throne with a landslide mandate, he noticed a party worker seated in one of the rows close to the stage was feeling unwell.

Delhi’s outgoing Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi was dancing and celebrating her victory in the Kalkaji constituency with the supporters and party workers.

Criticising Atishi’s actions in the wake of AAP’s shocking defeat, Swati Marlena wrote on X, “What kind of shameless display is this? All major party leaders of AAP lost and Atishi Marlena is celebrating like this?”

BJP leader Amit Shah said that Congress has shown everyone what happens when a party starts worshipping a family.

Taking to X, Shah wrote, “Congress is the biggest example of what happens to a party when it starts worshipping a family. In Delhi, where the Congress government was in power for 15 years a decade ago, the Congress has not even opened its account in the 6 elections held since 2014.”

In a sharp attack on the Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his speech post the massive Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) win in the Delhi elections, said the country was not ready to trust the Congress.

“I had said this earlier the Congress has become a parasitic party. It fails and those with it drown. It is ending its allies one by one,” said PM Modi in his address to party workers at the BJP headquarters. He was joined by other senior party leaders, including Amit Shah, JP Nadda, and others.

BJP leader Parvesh Verma, who defeated Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency, dedicated the victory to his father.

“Victory of faith and blessings on service, good governance. This is a historic victory of the God-like people of New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the Congress made a double-hattrick in achieving zero seats in the Delhi assembly elections.

“Congress has hit a double hattrick of ‘zero’ in Delhi elections. The oldest party in the country is not able to get even one seat in the national capital for the last 6 times. They are giving the gold medal of defeat to themselves,” said PM Modi.

He said that the country is not ready to trust Congress at all. PM Modi said that the Congress party fails itself and also causes damage to its allies. He said that INDI alliance was anti-Congress in Delhi.

He added that Congress is not as it was during the time of independence. Today, Congress does politics of urban naxals, said PM Modi.

He said that the urban naxal DNA has entered into the Congress.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that AAP was busy making the “Sheesh Mahal” at a time when Delhi was battling coronavirus. The party which was born to fight corruption got involved in corruption itself, he said.

“The party born out of the movement against corruption got involved in corruption. It became such a party of the country whose Chief Minister and Ministers went to jail on corruption charges. Those who used to give themselves certificates of honesty, turned out to be corrupt. This was a big betrayal with Delhi. The liquor scam defamed Delhi,” said PM Modi.

“I guarantee that in the first session of the assembly, the CAG report will be presented. Whatever has been looted will have to be returned. This is Modi ki gaurantee,” said PM Modi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the people of Delhi were in pain seeing the status of River Yamuna. He said that the BJP government will work to clean River Yamuna and will make it the identity of the capital city.

He said that social activist Anna Hazare was also in pain because of AAP and today his pain was also relieved.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that there is no area in Delhi where the lotus did not bloom.

“There is no such area in Delhi where the lotus did not bloom. People speaking every language have voted for the BJP,” he said.

“…I was seeing that BJP workers across the country also had a pain in their hearts. It was about not being able to serve Delhi fully. But today Delhi has accepted our request too. The youth born in the 21st century will now see BJP’s good governance in Delhi for the first time. Today’s results show how much trust the country has in BJP’s double-engine government,” the prime minister added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that ‘naari shakti’ (women empowerment) has proved to become BJP’s biggest protection shield. He said that the middle class and people from jhuggis also voted for BJP.

“I would like to tell the women of Delhi that we will fulfil our promise here also. We will make Delhi a modern city. For the first time, post-independence BJP has come to power in the entire NCR,” he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the NDA alliance carried the image of good governance.

“Wherever NDA is power we have taken the state to new developmental paths,” said PM Modi. He said that the NDA government made UP crime-free, Maharashtra got rid of drought and Haryana people started getting jobs without Kharchi-Parchi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi slammed Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal for his arrogance.

He said that governance is not a stage for any kind of theatrics.

”Delhi ka maalik hone ka jinko ghamand tha, Delhi ki janta ne unhe dikha diya ki janta hi Delhi ki maalik hai (Those who had the arrogance of being the head of Delhi were seen their real status),” said PM Modi.

He said that he tells everyone that he is an MP from Purvanchal. PM Modi said that the BJP had a wonderful victory even in Milkipur.

“Our Delhi is not just a city, it is a mini India. Delhi lives the idea of ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’…Wherever I went in this election, I used to say with pride that I am an MP from Purvanchal. The people of Purvanchal gave love, trust, new energy, new strength. Therefore, as an MP from Purvanchal, I especially thank the people of Purvanchal,” he said.

He criticised AAP for stopping the Ayushman scheme in Delhi. “We will work by staying grounded..we will work day and night for the development in Delhi,” said PM Modi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the people of Delhi have never disappointed BJP in the Lok Sabha elections. He said that the BJP won all seven seats in Delhi in the Lok Sabha elections in 2014, 2019, and 2024.

“The people of Delhi have never disappointed me in the Lok Sabha elections. In the Lok Sabha elections in 2014, 2019 and 2024, the people of Delhi have made BJP victorious in all 7 seats,” said PM Modi.

“But we always had this feeling that we were not able to do things fully in Delhi..but now Delhi will also become developed,” he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the victory of the BJP is a win of “Vikas, Vision and Vishavas”. “I thank the people of Delhi. Delhi has given us love wholeheartedly and I once again assure the people that we will return you double the love in the form of development,” he said.

He said that the people of Delhi have made it clear that the “real maalik” of Delhi are people. He said that there is no space for shortcuts, fraud and lies in the politics of Delhi.

“Today the people of Delhi have made it clear. The real owner of Delhi is only the people of Delhi. Those who thought of being the owners of Delhi have been confronted with the truth. This is also clear from the mandate of Delhi that there is no place for shortcuts, lies in politics. The people have ended the era of shortcut politics,” said PM Modi.

Speaking at the BJP headquarters, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Delhi is filled with joy and relief because it is free from the Aam Aadmi Party.

The prime minister said that Delhi is free of ‘AAP-da’.

He said that he had requested the people of Delhi to give a chance to BJP. “Today, there is excitement and relief in the minds of the people of Delhi. Excitement for victory and relief is for making Delhi, AAP-da free…I bow my head and thank the people of Delhi for believing in Modi’s guarantee,” said the prime minister.

Union Minister and BJP National President JP Nadda said that the Delhi assembly elections gave a befitting reply to the corrupt people and party. He called Aam Aadmi Party a “factory of telling lies …an encyclopedia of lies”.

“They (AAP) misled people in the name of education… These elections have given a clear message that the people of Delhi do not need such a (AAP) party. ‘AAP-Da’ is a factory of lies and a factory for finding new ways to commit corruption,” he said.

He further attacked Congress and said that the party has remained consistent in its score.

Union Minister and BJP National President JP Nadda said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi resides in the heart of the people of Delhi.

He said that this message has been given clearly by the people of Delhi in the assembly elections.

The unhappiness over the services could perhaps be one of the key reasons behind the loss of incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the decisive mandate for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), according to a LocalCircles survey.

LocalCircles conducted a survey from November 1, 2024 to February 1, 2025 to find out how Delhi voters rated the performance of the AAP government in the past five years in various areas from municipal services to healthcare and from reducing corruption to improving the air quality.

“It’s a massive moment that we are coming back to power after 26 years,” exclaimed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma who pipped AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal and Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit to win the prestigious New Delhi assembly seat in the February 5 elections.

Speaking to CNN-News18, Verma — who is said to be the frontrunner for the chief ministerial post — said “big challenges” lay ahead for the BJP which would “fulfill all our promises”.
