Farmers Protest, ‘Delhi Chalo’ March: A day after several people were injured in a face-off between Punjab farmers and Haryana Police at two borders between the states, protesters continued demonstrations on the second day on Wednesday (February 14). Police used tear gas and water cannons in an effort to stop the marching farmers as agitators tried to break past barricades blocking their protest march to the national capital. Twenty-four police personnel, including a deputy superintendent of police, were injured as protesters hurled stones at them, officials said. Farmer leaders said police also fired rubber bullets, and claimed over 60 protesters were hurt in the attack on them at Shambhu border, close to Haryana’s Ambala city.
Demands of 2024 Farmers Protest
Several farmer associations– mostly from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab– are starting their protest march today to demand a law guaranteeing a minimum support price (MSP), one of the conditions they had set when they agreed to withdraw their agitation against the now-repealed farm laws in 2021.
Apart from that, they are also seeking implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations, pensions for farmers and farm labourers, farm debt waiver, withdrawal of police cases and “justice” for victims of the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
