The deceased have been identified as Naveen Thomas, his wife Devi B, and their friend Arya B Nair.

Devi, one among the three who committed suicide in a hotel room in Arunachal Pradesh, is the daughter of renowned wildlife photographer Balan Madhavan. The mysterious death of three Malayalis – Devi, her husband Naveen Thomas and their teacher friend Arya B Nair – in a hotel in the hills of the northeast has raised speculations that “black magic" may be the cause behind their deaths.

While the renowned photographer was shattered by the news of his daughter’s sudden death, he stated that both Devi and her husband led a happy life and had no marital issues. “I don’t know what to do and what to say," he said.

Naveen and Devi got married in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram in 2011. Naveen and Devi were Ayurvedic doctors, while Arya was a school teacher and a resident of Thiruvananthapuram.

“Devi used to live in Naveen’s house in Kottayam. Only rarely did she visit Thiruvananthapuram. I am not in a condition to speak more on that. More than anyone I must find it out. Devi was very interested in the German language. After learning the language, she worked at Chempaka School for some time before the pandemic," Balan Madhavan was quoted by Kerala Kaumudi.

Meanwhile, the couple’s neighbours and relatives have described Naveen as a person who used to not talk much and was in his own world.

The report published in Kaumudi also revealed that Devi used to teach German in a private school where she met Arya, another teacher. The two then became very close friends.

    The Cryptic Note

According to a Malayalam website Mathrubhumi, Arunachal Pradesh Police said that they have recovered a suicide note from the room in which the couple were found dead along with their friend. The suicide note left police suspicious that if the couple fell prey to black magic.

“We have no debts. We don’t have any problems. We will go to the place where we should be," the suicide note read, adding, “Lived Happily for all these years and now going."

Prima facie, the three appeared to have bled to death from cuts on their wrists, the police said. Several reports stated that the police suspected the couple “fell prey to black magic" due to the message written in the suicide note.

Meanwhile, the Kerala police on Tuesday said it will be sending a team to Arunachal Pradesh in connection with the death of three persons hailing from the state.

Thiruvananthapuram city police Commissioner C Nagaraju said there appears to be something abnormal in the behaviour of the three — a married couple and a woman — but nothing can be said conclusively till their mobiles and other electronic devices are examined, NDTV reported.
