A love affair in defiance of familial disapproval led to a dramatic standoff at the Jamui court premises in Bihar on Tuesday. A young woman, who had eloped with her two-year-old child to marry her lover, found herself abandoned and at the centre of a social media storm.
Mamta Devi, a resident of Sangrampur village in Banka district, had been in love with Bittu Kumar, a resident of Bihar’s Munger district. Despite their wishes, Mamta’s family married her off to Jitendra Kumar, a resident of Gidhaur in Jamui district.

Maintaining contact with Bittu Kumar, Mamta Devi, who is now a mother, orchestrated an escape plan, fleeing her home with her child to the Jamui court premises with the intention to marry. However, the arrival of her husband and his family prompted Bittu to abandon Mamta and flee the scene.
Despite pleas from her in-laws to return home, Mamta Devi remained resolute in her refusal. The intervention of Mamta’s mother, who travelled from Banka to Jamui, finally persuaded her to leave with her. The entire episode has quickly become a viral sensation on social media.
