However, the police said that the allegations were false and his wife had not run away with anyone but had shifted to a relative’s house because the husband used to beat and abuse her repeatedly, NDTV reported.

Police called the allegations of the wife eloping with anyone baseless and said that further action is being taken in the case.

Here’s How The Bizzare Case Unfolded

Since Friday (January 3), the 36-year-old Rajeshwari, who is also the mother of six children, was missing.

On Sunday (January 5), a police complaint was registered by her husband Raju who claimed that his wife had eloped with 45-year-old Nanhe Pandit, who used to beg in their neighbourhood.

“Around 2 pm on January 3, my wife Rajeshwari told our daughter Khushboo that she was going to the market to buy clothes and vegetables. When she did not return, I looked for her everywhere, but could not find her. My wife left home with the money I made by selling a buffalo. I suspect that Nanhe Pandit has taken her with him," said Raju, in his complaint.

An FIR was registered by the police under Section 87 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita which is related to abduction of a woman.

“Whoever kidnaps or abducts any woman with intent that she may be compelled, or knowing it to be likely that she will be compelled, to marry any person against her will, or in order that she may be forced or seduced to illicit intercourse, or knowing it to be likely that she will be forced or seduced to illicit intercourse, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine," states the law.

“… whoever, by means of criminal intimidation as defined in this Sanhita or of abuse of authority or any other method of compulsion, induces any woman to go from any place with intent that she may be, or knowing that it is likely that she will be, forced or seduced to illicit intercourse with another person shall also be punishable as aforesaid," it further adds.

Hardoi police issued a statement yesterday in which they said that the woman in question visited their police station after they registered the FIR.

“Rajeshwari said her husband Raju would abuse her and beat her up. Upset with this, she went to her relative’s home in Farrukhabad. The allegations that the woman left with someone are false and baseless. We are taking further action," said the police.
