In a ground-breaking development for India’s judicial system, Kollam in Kerala is set to become the first city in the country to launch a 24×7 online court, transforming the way legal cases are processed.

Starting November 20, Wednesday, the innovative digital courtroom will offer round-the-clock access to the justice system, allowing litigants to file and resolve cases entirely online — without the need for physical presence, paperwork, or in-person hearings.

The online court, which will initially handle cases related to cheque dishonour under the Negotiable Instruments Act, aims to streamline legal proceedings, reduce case backlogs, and provide faster resolutions for litigants. Cases will be processed across the three Judicial First Class Courts and the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Kollam, with the online platform supporting both hearings and case management.

In a departure from traditional practices, all case filings will be done through a dedicated online portal, allowing litigants to submit forms and documents digitally, eliminating the need for paper-based documentation. This paperless approach ensures that the legal process can be initiated at any time – day or night – without the need to visit the courthouse in person.

A key feature of the online court is its flexibility. Since the system operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, litigants can file cases and access court services from anywhere, making it easier for those who face barriers due to work commitments, geographic distance, or personal constraints. Lawyers and litigants can also attend hearings and submit evidence electronically, further reducing the time and complexity involved in traditional court proceedings.

Summonses for the accused will be delivered electronically to the relevant police stations, ensuring prompt notification, while bail applications can also be submitted online. Court fees will be processed through secure e-payment systems, simplifying financial transactions for all parties involved.

Additionally, the system will offer real-time updates on the progress of each case, allowing both lawyers and litigants to track their cases and stay informed on ongoing proceedings. This transparency and efficiency make the system not only faster but also more accessible and accountable.

This pioneering initiative is a significant leap forward in efforts to modernise the country’s judicial system and improve access to justice. By reducing the need for physical attendance, the online court removes logistical barriers for many individuals, enabling greater participation in the legal process. It is expected that this model will serve as a prototype for other regions, paving the way for the future of legal proceedings in India.
