Our skin, though protective, is not impervious to harmful bacteria, viruses, or parasites. Even the slightest wound, scratch or bite can become a gateway for infections, which, if not treated promptly, can escalate into serious consequences.
A young man from Thalassery in Kannur city of Kerala had his palm amputated following an infection from a fish bite. The infection, caused by a rare flesh-eating bacteria, occurred while he was cleaning a pond.

Rajeesh, a dairy farmer from Madappeetika, was bitten on the hand by a fish while cleaning a small pond near his home in early February. Initially, the wound on his fingertip seemed minor, and he received treatment at Kodiyeri Primary Health Center. However, his condition worsened, and he was admitted to a hospital in Mahe before being transferred to Kozhikode.
Rare Bacterial Infection Diagnosed
In Kozhikode, Rajeesh was diagnosed with gas gangrene, a rare bacterial infection affecting only 1 in 100,000 individuals. Gas gangrene is a life-threatening infection caused by Clostridium bacteria, which release toxins that quickly damage tissues, leading to severe pain, swelling, and gas formation within the tissue.
The infection had rapidly spread from Rajeesh’s finger to his entire palm, destroying cells at an alarming rate. Doctors determined that amputation was necessary to prevent the infection from reaching his brain.
The amputation of his right hand has had a profound impact on Rajeesh’s life and livelihood. Health officials have confirmed that the infection is not contagious, offering some reassurance to the community.
This case illustrates how a seemingly minor injury can, in rare instances, result in life-changing outcomes, such as permanent disability or even death. Therefore, it is essential to remain cautious and attentive to injuries, regardless of how insignificant they may seem.
