Poet Kumar Vishwas stoked controversy with a veiled dig at actor and Trinamool Congress MP Shatrughan Sinha and his daughter Sonakshi Sinha’s interfaith marriage by invoking the Ramayana at a public event.

“Teach your children Ramayana, make them read the Geeta. Otherwise, someone else might take away the Shri Lakshmi of your house even if the house is named ‘Ramayana’," he said during an event in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.

Notably, Sonakshi Sinha tied the knot with longtime boyfriend and actor Zaheer Iqbal in June this year in an intimate wedding ceremony. Shatrughan Sinha’s house is named ‘Ramayana’, adding to the fact that Vishwas was referring to the inter-faith marriage.

Sonakshi Sinha’s inter-faith marriage was already surrounded by controversy as the entire Sinha family was not happy with the union as her brothers Luv and Kush were absent from the ceremony.

    Kumar Vishwas’ Remarks Spark Row

Vishwas’ comments on ‘Ramayana’ sparked a furious reaction on social media as they touched upon cultural and personal values. Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate called the remarks “lewd" and “cheap", asking does a girl not have a right to marry a person of her choice?"

“Kumar Vishwas ji, you not only made a cheap comment on Sonakshi Sinha’s inter-religious marriage, but you also exposed your real thinking about women… The foundation of marriage and marriage is equality, mutual trust and mutual love. No one takes anyone anywhere," she added in a post on X.

Shrinate added that had Vishwas “really studied" the Ramayana, he would have understood love. “You certainly got two minutes of cheap applause, but your stature sank further into the ground. You should realise your mistake and apologize to both the father and his daughter," she said.

Other netizens also criticised Vishwas for the remarks, highlighting that he had two daughters. Some people defended his remarks, saying he had spoken the truth. Many criticised users for sharing pictures of Vishwas’ daughters following the comments.

Sonakshi Sinha’s Spat With Mukesh Khanna

The actress further warned Khanna to stop bringing up the incident for attention, reminding him that she responded to his criticism respectfully due to the values instilled by her father. “The next time you decide to say anything about the values my father has instilled in me… please remember it’s because of those values that I have only said what I said, very respectfully," Sonakshi asserted.

Khanna later said that he had no intention to hurt either Sonakshi or her father. “I knew I was antagonising her by taking her name from that incident in the famous Kaun Banega Crorepati show. But I had no malicious intention to malign her or her father who is my senior and I have a very cordial relationship with him," he added.
