Every year, Tamils worldwide celebrate Pongal, a festival reflecting their ancient traditions and culture. They celebrate this day as a harvest festival, expressing gratitude and happiness to nature, farmers, and the animals that work alongside them.
The Tamil Nadu government has announced its Pongal gift package for Thai Pongal in 2025. A government order confirms that all rice family card holders and families residing in Sri Lankan Tamil rehabilitation camps will receive one kilogramme of brown rice, one kilogramme of sugar, and one whole sugarcane.

This initiative will benefit 22,094,585 rice ration card holders and families residing in Sri Lankan Tamil rehabilitation camps. The government has allocated Rs. 249.76 crore for this initiative. Additionally, all the complimentary dhotis and sarees to be distributed for the occasion of Pongal have been prepared and dispatched to all districts.
Former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam has urged the Tamil Nadu government to provide Rs. 2,000 in cash as part of the Pongal gift package. In a statement, he expressed that the announced Pongal gift package for 2025, consisting of one kilogram of green rice, one kilogram of sugar, and one whole sugarcane for all rice card holders, has shocked the people of Tamil Nadu.
This year, Cyclone Fennel and heavy rains across Tamil Nadu have severely affected countless people, causing significant damage to their belongings. A substantial disparity exists between the relief amount announced by the Tamil Nadu government and the actual losses suffered by those affected. Recovering from this devastation is anticipated to take two to three years. Consequently, the people of Tamil Nadu are experiencing considerable mental distress.
The DMK government’s announcement of the Pongal gift package has been met with criticism, with some stating that it will hinder the people of Tamil Nadu from celebrating Pongal lavishly. One individual stated, “To enable the people of Tamil Nadu to celebrate the Pongal festival in 2025 in a special way, at least Rs. 2,000 will be given to all family card holders without any discrimination. I request you to provide a Pongal package including Rs. 100,000 in cash."
