In a deeply distressing incident, a 67-year-old man in Haryana’s Faridabad district died by suicide, allegedly due to prolonged harassment by his son and daughter-in-law. The tragic event, which took place on February 22, only came to light 12 days later, prompting the police to register a case against the accused on March 4.

The deceased, identified as Kubernath Sharma, resided in Flat A/2-502 of the Royal Hills Society in Sector 87, Greater Faridabad. According to reports, he jumped from the fifth floor of his apartment building, leaving behind a suicide note detailing his suffering.

Following the incident, Kubernath’s son, Shailesh Kumar Sharma, informed the police that his father had been unwell and attributed his suicide to his medical condition. Acting on this statement, the police conducted a post-mortem examination. However, a crucial piece of evidence – a suicide note found in the deceased’s pocket – pointed to a different story.

The note alleged persistent mistreatment at the hands of his son and daughter-in-law, Akanksha. In the message, Kubernath wrote, “Beta aur bahu chappalon se maarte hain, jeene se achha marna hai. Isme kisi ka dosh nahi hai, sab upar waale ki marzi hai. (Son and daughter-in-law beat me with slippers. It is better to die than to live. No one is to blame for this; everything is God’s will.)" The harrowing details of the note suggest a long period of emotional and physical abuse, leading him to take the extreme step.

Sangram Singh, the officer in charge of the Tigaon police station, stated that the department received information about the incident around 4 PM on February 22. However, an FIR was only filed after further scrutiny of the case, following the emergence of the suicide note. The police have now registered a case against Shailesh Kumar Sharma and Akanksha and have initiated an investigation.

The police have also indicated that forensic verification of the handwriting in the suicide note will be conducted to confirm its authenticity. Legal proceedings and further inquiries are expected to follow.

However, the delay in registering the case sparked outrage, with many questioning why the police initially relied solely on the son’s statement, despite the existence of the suicide note. As the investigation unfolds, the tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the vulnerability many elderly individuals face and the urgent need for greater vigilance in addressing such cases of domestic abuse.
