To avoid suspicion, Rajitha also ate a portion of the poisoned rice and fell ill. She was admitted to the hospital along with her children but survived.
Her husband, Chennaya, was not at home that night due to his night shift and did not eat the meal. This led to police initially detaining him for questioning, as he was the only family member unaffected.
According to the investigators, Rajitha had carefully planned the murders. She had recently reconnected with a former school classmate at a reunion. Their friendship soon turned into an affair, and Rajitha decided she wanted to leave her family to be with him. However, she believed her children would come in the way of that plan, India Today reported.
On the night of the incident, Rajitha is said to have deliberately mixed poison into the curd served with rice for dinner. The children ate it and began to show signs of severe illness overnight. By the time Chennaya returned the next morning, the children were unresponsive. He rushed Rajitha and the children to hospital, but it was too late for the three siblings, the police stated.
