A recent order issued by the Jabalpur Police Department on gambling centres has led to a row in the city. This order, issued before Diwali, stated that no action should be taken against gambling centres operating near a river, pond, well, or on the first, second, or above a high-rise building. Instead, the accused should be chased away from the spot.

The copy of this order has gone viral on social media and has snowballed into a major controversy. The order attempted to alleviate fears of people playing and gambling at those spots towards police. The wording of the order made it seem as if the police were lax towards gamblers and bookies.

The intention behind the order was to ensure that whenever the police raid gambling dens operating at rivers, ponds, wells or high-rise buildings, the gamblers or bookies try to escape from the police at any cost. When they attempt to flee, they become prone to serious accidents. Following this, the responsibility to get those injured gamblers fall on the police department. Hence, the police department had issued the order as a warning and instruction to be cautious.

Jabalpur Superintendent of Police Sampat Upadhyay clarified that the wording of the order against gambling centres by the Jabalpur Police was not clear as it did not reflect the department’s objective.

This order which had raised questions about the credibility of the police department was ultimately revised. It stated that wherever such gambling dens are operating, the police should be cautious while taking action at that spot.
