While a political war of words is on over the Waqf board’s claim on 1,500 acres of farmers’ land in Karnataka’s Vijayapura, fresh evidence shows that the Waqf board’s name was inserted in revenue records overnight.
The farmers in Honvada village said they received notices from Tehsildar on October 4. Farmers have alleged a big conspiracy to register their land overnight in the name of the Waqf Board ahead of the Waqf Amendment Bill.

The farmers say there was no notice or no hearing as records show that Waqf board’s name made it to Column number 11 of the RTC (Record of Rights, Tenancy and Crops) just two days after Karnataka Waqf Minister BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan’s meeting with officials
The RTC belonging to 41 properties in Indi Taluk and three in Chadachan Taluk were changed to mention Waqf board’s name, records show.
Apart from this, at least 433 farmers have been given notices in the last three weeks linked to 124 Survey numbers in Vijayapura District.
With the opposition in Karnataka now upping the ante, the Siddaramaiah government has gotten into damage control mode. The Karnataka government has asked Assistant Commissioner Abid Gadyal to verify the mutations made in RTC in favour of Waqf board and call for records from the farmers.
The BJP has alleged that the Karnataka government is trying to corner the land of Hindu farmers before amendment to Waqf laws. “For vote-bank politics and minority appeasement, Congress governments have empowered the Waqf Board with unbridled power to claim land across the country. Both in 1995 and 2013, Congress governments gave the Waqf Board unchecked powers to declare any land as Waqf after a quick inquiry, rule through its own tribunal with final authority, and also remove encroachments under Section 54," accused the Bengaluru South MP.
Tehsildars in Kolhar and Devarahipparagi have allegedly issued notices based on the DC’s instructions during a video conference in September. Farmers have been producing RTC and revenue documents dating back to 1960s and 1970s, showing their right over the land and continuous possession and cultivation.
