The sequel to the 2023 horror thriller M3GAN is officially on its way. M3GAN 2.0 will hit theaters on June 27 this year and will continue the terrifying saga of the AI-powered doll that shocked audiences. The first film left us with the chilling twist that M3GAN’s intelligence had escaped into the digital world. The sequel will explore where that leads.

Two years after the events of the first film, M3GAN 2.0 follows Gemma (Allison Williams) and her niece, Cady (Violet McGraw), as they deal with the aftermath of their terrifying experience with M3GAN. Gemma is now a well-known author and a strong advocate for regulating artificial intelligence, while Cady, now a teenager, resents her aunt’s overprotectiveness. Their lives take a dark turn when a powerful defense contractor steals M3GAN’s technology and creates a new AI weapon called Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno). Amelia is a much more dangerous android than M3GAN and becomes a serious threat.

The official synopsis states, “With the future of human existence on the line, Gemma realizes that the only option is to resurrect M3GAN (Amie Donald, voiced by Jenna Davis) and give her a few upgrades, making her faster, stronger, and more lethal. As their paths collide, the original A.I icon is about to meet her match."

The first official trailer for M3GAN 2.0 was released on April 3 where M3GAN acknowledges some “bugs" in her original programming but says it’s “hardly fair" to blame her. She shows off her dance moves and some gory attacks then makes it clear that she will do anything to protect Cady. The trailer also teases M3GAN’s new upgraded look which is described as a “plastic Teletubbie." As the battle with the deadly AI Amelia looms, M3GAN demands an upgrade to fight the evil robot.

Director Gerard Johnstone, who also directed the original film, discussed the direction of the sequel in an interview with Entertainment Weekly last year. He felt it was important for M3GAN 2.0 to be “a response to what people loved about the first movie, but also this evolving conversation and fear that we’re having about how A.I. is changing us and changing our children and changing society."

“In a way, M3GAN is a personification of all of those fears," he added.

Along with returning cast members like Allison and Violet, M3GAN 2.0 will feature Ivanna Sakhno who will portray the villainous Amelia. M3GAN herself will once again be played by Amie Donald and voiced by Jenna Davis.
