AR Rahman and Saira Banu’s lawyer, Vandana Shah, has urged everyone to respect the couple’s privacy amid their divorce. In a recent interview, Shah revealed that the decision to part ways was mutual but painful.

“The divorce hasn’t happened yet. I am representing both of them. I can’t reveal the reason, but it is a marriage of 29 years. In every marriage, ups and downs are common. It is a painful decision, but it is a joint decision. Family’s privacy must be respected at this point of time," Vandana told news agency ANI.

Previously, the lawyer also clarified that AR Rahman’s divorce has nothing to do with his bassist, Mohini Dey’s decision to part ways with her husband, Mark Hartsuch. “There is no connection at all. Saira and Mr Rahman made this decision on their own," the lawyer said as quoted by ETimes.

AR Rahman and Saira Banu tied the knot in 1995. They have three children together – two daughters, Khatija and Rahima, and a son named Ameen Rahman. The couple confirmed their separation on Tuesday night through a joint statement.

“After many years of marriage, Mrs Saira has made the difficult decision to separate from her husband Mr AR Rahman. Despite their deep love for each other, the couple has found that the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap between them, one that neither party feels able to bridge at this time. Mrs Saira requests privacy and understanding from the public during this challenging time," the statement read.

Later, AR Rahman also addressed the separation on X (formerly Twitter) and shared a poetic and heartfelt message: “We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again. To our friends, thank you for your kindness and for respecting our privacy as we walk through this fragile chapter (sic)."
