K-pop boy group BOYNEXTDOOR recently bagged their first-ever music show trophy. On the January 16 episode of Mnet’s music show M Countdown, the six-membered boy band, comprising Jaehyun, Sungho, Riwoo, Taesan, Leehan and Woonhak, claimed the no. 1 spot for their smash hit track If I Say, I Love You. Their song left behind SEVENTEEN’s BSS’s CBZ (Prime Time) with a total of 9,500 points and led them to take the trophy home.

This win marked a milestone achievement for BOYNEXTDOOR, who made their debut in May 2023. According to a report by Koreaboo, Jaehyun, one of the members of the K-pop group under the HYBE label, got visibly emotional while accepting the award in the absence of his other teammates. More so because he was also the MC of the music show.

Jaehyun thanked their fans and had tears in his eyes while delivering the acceptance speech on stage. After singing the encore of the song, the BOYNEXTDOOR leader also started crying, which sparked mixed reactions online.

As soon as a video of Jaehyun’s emotional moment was shared on X, it was met with harsh criticisms from the people on the platform. A particular comment said that the BOYNEXTDOOR member was behaving as if he had won a Grammy. The user said, “Why is he acting like he won a Grammy…"

Another comment read, “Male idols are acting all cutesy and dumb in front of their braindead fangirls then go on to be horrible people irl," whereas someone else wrote, “Doing all that over an M-countdown win."

After such harsh comments surfaced on the internet, Jaehyun’s fans quickly came to his rescue. A section of his fans asked the critics to leave the idol alone, whereas some urged the artists to enjoy every win, both small and big, in their career.

One fan wrote, “‘Acting like he won a Grammy’ because god forbid anyone be grateful for the smaller things in life. literally, who are you to dictate how a humble person reacts to ANY career milestone regardless of how unimportant it is in your unasked for unwanted opinion."

Another said, “LOUDERRR!!! Like ofc he’s gonna be grateful and happy idk why ppl have to be so mad and pressed " Someone else pointed out, “Honestly, anyone who appreciates even the smaller things like that gains more of my respect cause it makes me feel like they truly appreciate and care about their craft man. And, like you gotta start somewhere."

BOYNEXTDOOR released If I Say I Love You on January 6 as the band’s first digital single.
