Netflix released the highly anticipated Japanese action thriller film Bullet Train Explosion on April 23. This fast-paced thriller wastes no time in pulling viewers into a tense and thrilling story aboard Japan’s iconic bullet train. A sequel to the 1975 film The Bullet Train, the story revolves around the 5060 Hayabusa Shinkansen, a bullet train speeding towards Tokyo with over 300 passengers.

Soon after its departure, the train operator gets a call, where a person informs that he planted a bomb on the train, and if the speed decreases below 100 kmph, it will explode. As panic spreads, veteran conductor Takaichi, played by the brilliant Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, steps up to take charge of the situation.

Taking to X, many viewers expressed their thoughts after watching the Bullet Train Explosion. While many praised the director’s work, some felt that the cast was weak. Whereas a section felt that every minute of the movie was worth watching.

One user said, “#BulletTrainExplosion coming from Shin Godzilla/Ultraman director Shinji Higuchi, this disaster movie looked/sound/felt great. Sweet to see the inner workers of JR & the social commentary was nuanced enough. Weakest was the ensemble & various levels of acting throughout."

Another added, “Just watched Bullet Train Explosion such a good movie in my opinion! The movie even made my stomach feel weird even though I was watching the movie and not on the train! The chaos and plans, everything to try stop the train is fantastic!"

A different viewer praised director Shinji Higuchi, saying, “Shinji Higuchi knows how to elevate drama and spectacle with a charming, animated, and even clever sense of theatrics. In the case of BULLET TRAIN EXPLOSION, this cannot be any truer than it already is."

“Bullet Train Explosion was a good movie. Great throwback to disaster flicks like Airport 77 or Zero Hour. Good cast and great special effects, which is the norm for a Shinji Higuchi picture," wrote a user.

Someone else posted: “A non-stop kinetic train ride with bombastic special effects, high tensions, and a superb directorial vision. @shinji_higuchi’s #BulletTrainExplosion is a wildly entertaining action thriller that honours the 1975 classic with an explosive modern update that fires on all cylinders."

Directed by Shinji Higuchi, the film features Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, Kanata Hosoda, Non, Takumi Saitoh, Machiko Ono, Jun Kaname and Hana Toyoshima in key roles.
