Released on January 17, Emergency stars Kangana Ranaut as former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Kangana is not just playing the lead in Emergency but has also directed it. The film explores the 21-month Emergency imposed by Gandhi, from 1975 to 1977, often referred to as the darkest chapter of independent India.
Besides Ranaut, Emergency also stars Anupam Kher as Jayaprakash Narayan, Shreyas Talpade as Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Mahima Chaudhry as Pupul Jayakar, Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw and Vishak Nair as Sanjay Gandhi.
Emergency received mixed reviews from all. News18 Showsha also gave the film a 3-star rating. “While Emergency ambitiously spans multiple events, its structure leaves much to be desired. The first half feels stretched, while the post-interval portions seem rushed. Scenes like Gandhi’s self-comparison to an old devil feel distasteful and unnecessary," a part of our review read. However, the film failed to rule the box office. It earned Rs 17 crore in India.
However, Kangana recently shared a picture of the handwritten note praising Emergency and claimed that she received it from someone from othe pposition. “Hey, saw Emergency yesterday you are tooooo good! Love," the note read. The actress wrote that the note of appreciation came to her quietly and that it made her smile. “A little note of appreciation from the other side quitely came to me…. and made me smile warmly #emergency #parliamentday," she wrote.
