It would not be wrong to call 2024 a fantastic year for Indian cinema lovers. From re-releases to fresh movies, this year was packed with entertainment. Whether it was big-screen blockbusters, OTT projects or pan-Indian spectacles, every release had us glued to our screens. Adding to the excitement, 2024 also marked some remarkable directorial debuts. From Dev Patel to Kunal Kemmu and Tahira Kashyap to Boman Irani, several artists ventured into direction and delivered stellar projects. Without further ado, here is a list of the top 5 directorial debuts of 2024:

1. Madgaon Express – Kunal Kemmu

    Kunal Kemmu made a stellar debut as a director with Madgaon Express. Released in March, it features Divyenndu, Pratik Gandhi and Avinash Tiwary in leading roles. The story revolves around a group of friends who dreamed of going to Goa since childhood. When they finally make the trip as adults, things take an unexpected turn. Nora Fatehi, Remo D’Souza and Chhaya Kadam also play important roles in the film.

    2. Monkey Man – Dev Patel

    Dev Patel not only directed Monkey Man but also starred in it and co-wrote the screenplay with John Collee and Paul Angunawela. The film premiered at South by Southwest in March and was released in the United States and Canada by Universal Pictures on April 5. It marks the Hollywood debut of Sobhita Dhulipala. Pitobash, Sikandar Kher and Makarand Deshpande are also part of this project.

    3. The Mehta Boys – Boman Irani

    Boman Irani stepped into the world of direction with The Mehta Boys. The film, co-written by Irani and Alexander Dinelaris, features Shreya Chaudhry, Avinash Tiwary and Puja Sarup in key roles. It was screened at the Chicago South Asian Film Festival on September 20, where it won the Best Feature Film Award. It was also showcased at the International Film Festival of India and is slated for release on Prime Video.

    4. Sharmajee Ki Beti – Tahira Kashyap

    Tahira Kashyap, author and wife of Ayushmann Khurrana, made her directorial debut with Sharmajee Ki Beti. The film stars Sakshi Tanwar, Divya Dutta, and Saiyami Kher in lead roles, along with Vanshika Taparia, Arista Mehta, Sharib Hashmi and Parvin Dabas in pivotal parts. The story follows the lives of three remarkable women, all sharing the surname ‘Sharma,’ as they navigate their unique challenges.

    5. Lootere – Jai Mehta

    Jai Mehta, son of celebrated director Hansal Mehta, ventured into direction with the Disney+ Hotstar series Lootere. The show tells the gripping story of a Ukrainian trading vessel attacked by Somali pirates in international waters.
