Sitarist Anoushka Shankar Talks About Her Musical Ties To India After Grammys Nomination

Anoushkar Shankar bagged two nominations at the 2025 Grammys and was also selected as an official presenter at the event.

Globally renowned sitarist and composer Anoushka Shankar marked a major milestone at the 67th Grammy Awards, stepping onto the prestigious state as a presenter while attending the event as one of the nominees. Shankar, who recently also arrived in India to unveil the first single from her new EP, Chapter 3 opened up about her feelings about being back home. Besides speaking about her musical connections to India, Shankar was seen shedding light on the growing influence of Indian music globally, including her nomination at the Grammys.

“It always feels like a homecoming every time I come back. The particular journey I’m on right now, with these 3 chapters I’ve been making and releasing, the idea of it was seeded when I was here in India. So, it just all feels very connected and very meaningful," she told Hindustan Times.

    Reflecting on her father, the late Ravi Shankar, Anoushka admitted that she feels like representing the entire country globally through her music. “I do represent the tradition so 90 per cent of the time I’m touring outside of India but I’m representing India. That feels like a beautiful responsibility. My music has always made me feel more connected to my roots in India than anything else," she added.

    Anoushka Shankar also expressed her feelings over her Grammy nomination this year which she lost out to Indian-American vocalist and entrepreneur Chandrika Tandon in the Best New Age, Ambient or Chant Album category.

    She said, “In the past, I have thought that this time, the odds would be in my favour but when I didn’t win, I realised the odds are always 20% every time. I try to keep it in perspective that the nominations are exciting, and that’s great."

    Anoushka Shankar explained that there has been a shift in the global music industry with more visibility and presence of the South Asian culture.

    Anoushka Shankar, who is the daughter of legendary music composer Ravi Shankar, received two Grammy nominations this year for her albums Ch II: How Dark It Is Before Dawn’ and ‘A Rock Somewhere, bringing her total Grammy nominations to 11. She was also chosen as a presenter, giving her a significant chance to represent the country on a global platform.
