Tigmanshu Dhulia Recalls Serving Shah Rukh Khan 'Ghatiya Si Chai' In '94: 'Saw A Microwave For The First Time'
Tigmanshu Dhulia recalls his early career assisting Shekhar Kapur and making bad tea for Shah Rukh Khan.
Tigmanshu Dhulia is a well-known director today, but he began his career as an assistant to Shekhar Kapur, who made films like Masoom (1983), Mr. India (1987), and Bandit Queen (1994). Shekhar, however, became known for stepping away from Hindi films when Hollywood offered him work. “Shekhar ji started and stopped several films while he was in India for 1-2 years after Bandit Queen, and before going to Hollywood," Tigmanshu said in an interview with ANI.
He went on to recall, “One of them was Maut Se Jo Darte Nahi, with Shah Rukh Khan, Naseeruddin Shah, and Suniel Shetty. He’d made a film Joshilaay (1989), which he abandoned after completing 80% of filming. It was the first film shot in Ladakh. It had action like a Western. Shekhar ji wanted to make an action adventure film like that. So he started working on this film."

In the same interview, Tigmanshu Dhulia remembered making bad tea for Shah Rukh Khan when he visited Shekhar Kapur’s Mumbai home. He said, “Shekhar ji ne kaha, ‘Chai bana de yar.’ Pehli bar maine microwave dekha hota kya hai. Main aapko ’94 ki baat bata raha hu. Phir bhi bahut hi ghatiya si chai maine Shah Rukh ko pilayi thi (Shekhar asked me to make tea. I saw a microwave for the first time. This was 1994. I made a terrible tea for Shah Rukh)."
