Indian hockey team skipper Harmanpreet Singh spearheaded Soorma Hockey Club to a hard-fought win over Tamil Nadu Dragons in the encounter between the sides in the Hockey India League on Sunday.

Soorma picked up all points on offer as they edged out the side from TN on penalties following a 1-1 stalemate at the conclusion of open play. Nathan Ephramaus put the Dragons ahead with a 49th-minute strike, but Gurjant Singh’s leveller five minutes later restored parity.

Harmanpreet congratulated his side for picking up the points in their opening assignment in the league that has returned following a seven-year hiatus. The 28-year-old also credited his side for holding the lion’s share of possession in the win and lauded his team for building a competitive unit.

“We had the ball possession for most of the time in the match and throughout the match, we played well," the Indian skipper said.

“This was our first match with new players and we have built a lot," he added.

Harmanpreet opined that the shootout is a coin toss in essence and that his team need to make improvements to finish off games in regulation time, but also added that he was chuffed to get off the mark in his side’s opening outing in the HIL.

“In the next match, we will try to improve and win the match," the Indian star stated.

“Shootout is always a 50-50 chance and we’re happy to win the match and start with two points," Harmanpreet added.
