Microsoft is going to end the support for Windows 10 PCs later this year but security experts are already concerned about its repercussions. In fact, they are even warning millions of Windows 10 users to upgrade at the earliest and not wait for the October 2025 deadline to make their next purchase.

Cybersecurity firm ESET is taking the charge with the details, and quoted in this report, claims that hackers might be already eyeing these people whose systems will become vulnerable as the security support runs out in the next few months.

“We strongly advise all users not to wait until October, but to switch to Windows 11 immediately or choose an alternative operating system if their device cannot be updated to the latest Windows operating system," an ESET security expert was quoted saying.

Microsoft’s biggest issue going into this turnover is that even today more than 60 percent of Windows PCs are running on the older 10 version, which is different from when the Windows 7 to Windows 10 migration happened many years back. The company has effectively closed the gates on a possible free Windows 11 upgrade for millions of PCs with its TPM 2.0 requirement, and the current state of the Windows market means you are going to be spending big for the next PC.

Having said that, Windows is not the only option for the buyers, they can easily look at Macs or even opt for Linux if they have the know-how and interest in the platform. Security threats are always going to get people’s attention and ESET is only forewarning these users to help them prevent a major disaster from unfolding and causing massive loss to people using these systems.

The situation with the Windows 11 upgrade might be different in countries like India, where the ecosystem is fragmented and allows people to look at cheaper resources to run these operating systems on their machines without getting caught.
